What is an Instrument Technician?
An instrumentation technician will install, test, calibrate, monitor and inspect Instrumentation equipment, valves and devices which are used for measuring, monitoring, controlling and automation of factories, plants, laboratories, complex buildings, farms etc. They also perform general maintenance on the equipment, adjusting system components, and replacing defective parts. They will be experts in both pneumatic and electronic devices and instruments. They will be also well-versed in automation software such as PLC, DCS (Distributed Control System), BMS (Building Management System) and SCADA. Skills in AutoCAD are an added advantage for Instrument Technicians. Reading and understanding Engineering Drawings is a mandatory skill required to become an Instrument Technician.
What is the Qualification required to become an Instrument Technician?
Instrument Technicians require a high school diploma or equivalent and have completed additional vocational or technical training in electronics & instrumentation. Technical schools offer vocational certificate or diploma programs to provide students with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to work as an Instrument technician. Employers may also require candidates to have work experience in relevant fields. It is best to complete a course and achieve a certificate certified/accredited by Government Bodies such as NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training, https://ncert.nic.in ), VHSE (http://www.vhse.kerala.gov.in) or nationally/ internationally reputed universities.
